Rinchen Youdol Becomes Ladakh’s First International Para Taekwondo Medalist
VOL Desk, Nov 28,( Mussa Tumaily) – Rinchen Youdol, a trailblazing Para Taekwondo athlete from Ladakh, has etched her name in history by securing a Bronze Medal at the inaugural World Para Poomsae Taekwondo Championships held in Manama, Bahrain. Her remarkable achievement has not only brought immense pride to Kargil and the Union Territory of Ladakh but has also showcased India’s growing prominence in international sports. The event, a milestone in the world of Para Taekwondo, attracted global attention and celebrated the spirit of inclusivity and athletic excellence. Rinchen, hailing from Bodhkharboo village in Kargil, is the daughter of Morup Dorjey and Stanzin Angmo. Her extraordinary feat marks a significant moment for Ladakh, as she becomes the first athlete from the region to earn a medal at an international Para Taekwondo competition. The 1st World Para Poomsae Taekwondo Championships were conducted under the esteemed patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Paralympic Committee. This prestigious event brought together 140 athletes from 23 countries spanning five continents, setting a new benchmark for global Para Taekwondo competitions. Rinchen competed in the Senior Female Contestants category (No Age Bar), a division known for its fierce competition. She faced some of the world’s best athletes, including Janine Watson of Australia, Jane Bedford of Great Britain, and Eleni Nestora of Greece. Despite the challenges, Rinchen’s exceptional skill and determination secured her a place on the podium with a Bronze Medal. Reflecting on her historic victory, Rinchen shared, “It’s an overwhelming and surreal experience. Representing Ladakh and India at an international platform has been a dream come true. This journey began when I was just 10 years old, and today, years of perseverance and hard work have borne fruit.” She dedicated her success to her coaches, family, and the relentless support of various individuals and organizations in Ladakh. Rinchen acknowledged the encouragement and guidance she received from key figures, including Brig (Dr.) B.D. Mishra, Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Ladakh; Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, CEC of LAHDC Kargil; Advocate Tashi Gyalson, CEC of LAHDC Leh; and Ghulam Mustafa, President of Para Poomsae Taekwondo Ladakh. “I owe this achievement to their unwavering belief in my abilities and their continuous support. Without their encouragement, this milestone would not have been possible,” she added. The event kicked off with a grand opening ceremony, featuring a parade of participating nations and an inspiring address by World Taekwondo President, Dr. Chungwon Choue. He emphasized the growing significance of Para Taekwondo and its inclusion in the LA 2028 Paralympic Games. Athletes from countries such as Greece, Colombia, Morocco, Singapore, and Iraq showcased extraordinary performances, adding to the championship’s vibrant and competitive atmosphere. Rinchen’s Bronze Medal placed India prominently among the top-performing nations, further solidifying the country’s position in the global Para Taekwondo community.
