KARGIL/ZOJILA, June 9/ VOL News Desk/ A historic “breakthrough” is expected today in the Zojila Tunnel—one of the country’s most important infrastructural and strategic projects that connects Ladakh with the Kashmir Valley and other parts of the country in all weather conditions. This is being termed as an extraordinary and memorable milestone for the people of Ladakh, especially the Kargil district. This approximately 14-kilometer-long tunnel is counted among Asia’s longest bi-directional highway tunnels, and its completion is expected to open up new possibilities in development, trade, tourism, and the defense sector in the region.

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will participate as the Chief Guest in the breakthrough ceremony. On this occasion, Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor BD Mishra, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, high-level administration of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, public representatives, and other dignitaries will also be present.

The Zojila Tunnel project has been a long-standing demand of the people of Ladakh for several decades. Particularly, the people of Kargil district have been constantly emphasizing the provision of a permanent and safe alternative route to the Zojila Pass so that connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh is not disrupted during heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions. Every year during winter, the Zojila Pass closes due to snowfall, cutting off Ladakh overland from the rest of the country for several months, which causes severe difficulties for ordinary citizens, patients, students, and traders.

From a defense standpoint, the importance of the Zojila Tunnel is highly extraordinary. Ladakh is a sensitive border region where military movement and timely supply of provisions are considered indispensable for national security. This all-weather usable tunnel will play a crucial role in ensuring rapid access of military equipment and personnel to the border areas and will further strengthen defense preparedness.
