Ladakh in Turmoil: Hunger Strike Ends Amid Clashes, Section 163 Imposed, Three Dead

Leh, September 25, 2025: The ongoing agitation in Ladakh, which entered its 15th day today, took a tragic turn as three protesters lost their lives during clashes at indus NDS Ground site in Leh. Thousands had gathered to support climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike demanding constitutional safeguards and statehood for the region. The situation escalated as violence erupted between demonstrators and security personnel.

Reports confirm that a BJP office and parts of the Council Secretariat site were set on fire, and several vehicles were damaged. Police reportedly used tear gas and aerial firing to disperse the crowd. Numerous protesters sustained injuries and were admitted to SNM Hospital Leh. Following the unrest, the District Administration imposed Section 163 to restore law and order.

In view of the escalating tension and safety concerns, Sonam Wangchuk announced today that he would end his planned 35-day hunger strike. Addressing the crowd, he urged residents to remain peaceful while continuing their demand for dialogue with the Central Government.

The protest had already drawn concern yesterday when two senior participants, Tsering Angchuk (72) and Tashi Dolma (60), were hospitalized after their health deteriorated during fasting. Shops across Leh remained closed, and the concluding day of the Ladakh Festival was cancelled.

In Kargil, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), with support from traders and the Transport Association, called for a complete shutdown across all sub-divisions tomorrow. A joint press conference is also expected to outline their next steps.

This movement echoes earlier protests in Ladakh. In February 2023, Sonam Wangchuk led a 5-day hunger strike demanding Sixth Schedule protections, preservation of Ladakh’s culture and ecology, and constitutional safeguards. That protest ended peacefully but raised concerns over delays in talks with the Centre.

Today’s events have made this movement one of the most significant and tragic in Ladakh’s recent history. Thousands participated in solidarity, including students and youth, highlighting the depth of local concern over governance and regional rights. Observers note that the loss of life will have a profound impact on the community, and emphasize the urgent need for dialogue to prevent further escalation.

Local leaders and citizens alike are calling for calm, urging all sides to prioritize peaceful engagement. With the hunger strike concluded, the focus now turns to negotiations with the Central Government to address long-standing demands and ensure the safety and rights of the people of Ladakh.
