Gaza on the Brink: AKSAD Urges Action as Famine Looms

Gaza is on the brink of a full-scale famine, with a dire humanitarian catastrophe unfolding as the world observes. Since October 2023, over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed, and despite intermittent pauses meant to deliver aid, the civilian population, especially children, women, and the most vulnerable, are enduring unimaginable suffering under what is being described as collective punishment. The severity of the crisis is underscored by recent assessments indicating that famine conditions have already taken hold across significant parts of the enclave.

The extent of the nutritional emergency is alarming. Between April and mid-July 2025, more than 20,000 children required treatment for severe malnutrition. Furthermore, over 25% of pregnant and breastfeeding women screened by humanitarian organizations were found to be malnourished, marking a sharp 16% increase since June. A shocking reality is that nearly all children aged 6 to 23 months, along with expectant and nursing mothers, are deprived of basic nutritional sustenance, leaving an estimated 300,000 children under five and 150,000 women in desperate need of life-saving therapeutic interventions.

United Nations agencies have issued grave warnings, reporting that over 500,000 people—nearly a quarter of Gaza’s population—are now facing famine-like deprivation, while the remainder of the population endures emergency-level hunger. This deliberate infliction of starvation and deprivation represents a flagrant violation of international law, including the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, which explicitly prohibit the use of hunger as a weapon of war.
In light of this escalating crisis, the All Kargil (Ladakh) Students’ Association Delhi (AKSAD) has issued a statement condemning the ongoing assault and expressing resolute solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine. AKSAD urged the Government of India to leverage its global influence to help end this crime against humanity, emphasizing India’s historical defense of human dignity and its long-standing support for anti-colonial struggles and non-aligned leadership. The association called upon national and international leaders for urgent action to end the violence, ensure full humanitarian access, and hold those responsible accountable, asserting that “neutrality is complicity” and immediate intervention is crucial to prevent further civilian suffering.
