Army jawan rescues two civilians trapped in land cum mud slide outburst on Khalsar-agham-shyok road
The Khalsar–Agham–Shyok Road, a key axis connecting Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso, has four major Nallah crossings which regularly witness high discharge, leading to frequent disruptions in traffic and movement during summers. The road is important not only from a strategic standpoint but also for civilian connectivity and tourism in the Ladakh region.
Teams from 111 RCC / 753 BRTF / Project HIMANK have been continuously engaged in maintaining and keeping this stretch open by carrying out regular diversion and clearance works at the treacherous Nallahs to ensure smooth connectivity and safe traffic movement.
On 06 July 2025, at approximately 1600 hrs, while the road was already closed for the day for maintenance due to heavy flow from Nallah 2 at Km 59.40, the 111 RCC teams were working on diverting the water channel to open the axis. During the ongoing work, a sudden massive Land cum mud-slide outburst occurred, covering approximately 500 metres of the road with mud, boulders and debris.

A vehicle carrying two tourists named as Ms Navritu Singh and Mr Sabal Gupta got stuck in the area due to excessive discharge of water in this Nallah when the slide occurred, rendering both individuals trapped in this life threatening and dangerous conditions. Moreover, the risk of further slides remained high, and the area was unstable.
Sapper Kailash of 111 RCC, who was operating dozer at higher reaches to divert water channels so as to carry out repair work at high stream location, quickly responded to the situation. He saw the stuck Vehicle with two passengers struggling to move out of the car, immediately rushed towards the vehicle amidst incoming Land cum mud-slide outburst in Naalah 2 without thinking of its own safety, entered the affected zone and extracted both civilians one by one from the dangerous slide location and moved them to a safe location. In this act of bravery, Kailash sustained minor injuries but saved two precious lives and sent them to nearest Field Hospital at Partapur.
The timely action by Sapper Kailash of 111 RCC helped prevent any loss of life. His quick response ensured the safety of both individuals in the face of detrimental calamity situation with utter disregard to personal safety living upto the indomitable spirit of Border Roads Organisation – We create, We connect & We care..
