Sub-Committee of Ministry of Home Affairs to Visit Leh; Key Talks with Ladakh Representatives Expected on July 2

Kargil, June 30/ VOL News Desk/ A sub-committee constituted under the leadership of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is set to visit Ladakh this week, where it will hold important discussions with representative organizations of the region. The meeting aims to break the deadlock that emerged after the last round of talks held in New Delhi on May 22 and to make progress on pending issues.

In this regard, Co-Chairman of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai, stated that he has been formally invited to attend the meeting scheduled to be held in Leh on July 2.

He said that several key points discussed in detail during the previous meeting were not included in the official Minutes of the Meeting, which led to serious concerns. According to him, these agendas will be taken up comprehensively in the upcoming meeting to ensure clarity and meaningful progress in the dialogue process.

This will be the first time that the centrally constituted sub-committee will visit Ladakh and engage directly with the local leadership, which is being seen as a significant development in the negotiation process.

It is worth mentioning that during the last meeting held in New Delhi on May 22, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) had, in principle, reached a consensus with the sub-committee. Reports suggest that an initial framework was also agreed upon for the establishment of an elected body in Ladakh with legislative, administrative, and financial powers.

Both organizations have been demanding full statehood for Ladakh and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India for the past six years, and have been actively pursuing political and public campaigns in this regard.

However, the KDA and the Leh Apex Body later alleged that the official Minutes of the Meeting did not accurately reflect the actual discussions and agreed points. In protest, both organizations had called for a half-day shutdown across Ladakh on June 23, which received significant public support.

All eyes are now on the upcoming meeting in Leh on July 2, where it is expected that the stakeholders will attempt to resolve pending issues and move the dialogue process forward.
