Severe Heatwave Hits Ladakh, Particularly Kargil District, Rivers Experience Dangerous Surge in Water Flow

Kargil, June 30/ VOL News Desk/ The Union Territory of Ladakh, particularly Kargil district, has been under the grip of an intense heatwave for the past four days, severely affecting normal life and causing various problems for the public. The unusually high temperatures have impacted daily activities, educational matters, and public movement.

The severe heat is affecting children, elderly people, and those engaged in physical labor the most. The continuous rise in daytime temperatures is being felt in both urban and rural areas, forcing people to adopt precautionary measures.
According to experts, weather changes usually begin in the Ladakh region after June 21 with temperatures gradually increasing, but this year the intensity of heat is being felt much more than normal.

As per the Meteorological Department’s report, the maximum temperature recorded in Kargil district was 31.6 degrees Celsius, while in Leh district it was 28.4 degrees Celsius, which is considered a notable increase for the region’s climate.

On the other hand, due to the severe heat causing faster snow melting, there has been a significant increase in water flow in various streams and rivers. Particularly in the Suru River, the water level has risen, making the river appear overflowing, with fears of flood-like situations at some places.

Experts and local administration have appealed to the public to adopt precautionary measures, avoid going near rivers and streams unnecessarily, and not allow children to go near water bodies alone to prevent any untoward incident.

Due to the severe heat, young school-going children may also face difficulties. Parents have been advised to protect children from direct sunlight, ensure they drink adequate water, and keep them away from unnecessary activities during the hot hours of the day.
