Concern Over Industrial Smoke Near Damsna Tourist Spot in Suru Valley; Locals Demand Environmental Probe

Damsna, Taisuru/Kargil: Thick smoke allegedly emanating from an industrial unit near Damsna, a popular tourist and recreational spot in the Suru Valley, has caused concern among local residents, tourists, and environmental circles.
According to local sources, the industrial unit has been set up by a company named Top Line under a National Highway macadam laying project.

Reports indicate that some local tourists recorded images and videos of the smoke coming from the industrial unit and shared them with the media. The visual evidence shows continuous dark grey smoke rising from a tall chimney and spreading into the surrounding mountainous atmosphere.
Tourists and locals have expressed fears that if timely monitoring and control of such emissions are not implemented, it could not only affect the air quality of the nearby population but may also have possible impacts on the nearby snow-covered mountains, glacial systems, and the natural environment.

Locals state that industrial activities must be carried out according to environment-friendly principles, and such industrial units and factories should be established at a safe distance from sensitive ecological areas, settlements, and glacial regions to maintain the natural balance.

It is worth mentioning that Suru Valley has remained a center of global attention due to its unparalleled natural beauty, high snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and lush green landscapes. It has been counted among the world’s most beautiful places in various international lists and travel reviews. For this reason, local inhabitants are highly sensitive regarding the protection of the area’s natural character and ecological preservation.

Environmental activists and local citizens have demanded that the concerned Pollution Control Department, district administration, and other responsible institutions take immediate notice of the matter and conduct a transparent investigation into the industrial unit’s emission system, air pollution standards, and compliance with environmental regulations.

The local public says that development projects are necessary for the region; however, priority must be given to environmental protection and the preservation of natural heritage during their implementation so that the natural beauty and ecological identity of Taisuru and the entire Suru Valley can be safeguarded for future generations.
