DCC Kargil Opposes Proposed Power Sector Joint Venture with REC

Kargil, April 26/ VOL News Desk/ The District Congress Committee (DCC) Kargil has strongly opposed the Union Territory Administration’s proposal to form a Joint Venture between the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD) and Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), in which REC would hold a 51% majority stake in Ladakh’s power sector.

In a press release issued on Sunday, DCC Kargil described the proposed move as anti-people and against the long-term interests of the region. The committee stated that electricity is not merely a commercial commodity but a lifeline essential for the people living in one of the harshest inhabited regions of the world.

The DCC Kargil demanded the immediate withdrawal or reconsideration of the proposed Joint Venture in its present form. It also called for transparent and meaningful consultation with all stakeholders, including elected representatives, employees, civil society, and the general public, before undertaking any structural reforms in the power sector.

The committee further demanded the retention of full public ownership and administrative control of the power sector under the UT Administration of Ladakh, along with time-bound resolution of all pending HR issues of existing employees before any restructuring is contemplated.

Reiterating its firm stand, DCC Kargil cautioned that any attempt to impose such major policy decisions without proper public consultation would face strong democratic opposition from the people of Ladakh.
The press release was signed by the District President, DCC Kargil.
