Govt. Model Middle School Biathang inaugurates Egay Classes, launches textbooks
Kargil, April 30, 2025: Govt. Model Middle School Biathang achieved a remarkable milestone in cultural and linguistic preservation with the inauguration of Egay classes during a special programme.
The event featured Dr. Sonam Wangchuk, Founder of Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation, as Chief Guest, with renowned historian Mohammad Sadiq Hardassi and Stawa Editor Sunetro Goshal as Guests of Honour.
The highlight of the event was the formal release of specially designed textbooks for Egay classes, aimed at promoting the Egay script—a unifying script for all Ladakhi languages.

In his address, Dr. Sonam Wangchuk praised the initiative as a significant step toward the preservation and revival of Ladakhi languages through script learning.
He said the adoption of Egay script would not only promote mother tongues but also serve as a model for other schools in the region.
Dr. Wangchuk expressed appreciation for the School Management Committee and the school administration for their visionary step in introducing the Egay script.
Master Mohammad Sadiq, in his remarks, commended the school’s efforts, highlighting how such initiatives contribute to the overall personality development of students.
Yawar Abass, representative of the Village Education Committee (VEC), extended gratitude to Dr. Sonam Wangchuk and his team for travelling from Leh to Kargil to support the programme.
He also urged Dr. Wangchuk to include Government Model Middle School Biathang in future school-based programmes and initiatives of the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation.
Headmaster Gulzar Ali concluded the event with a heartfelt vote of thanks to all dignitaries, guests, and participants for making the programme a memorable and successful one.
