On December 1st 2024, the Apex Body Leh and KDA convened a pivotal meeting at the Ladakh Bhawan Conference Hall in Delhi to deliberate on significant issues concerning Ladakh ahead of the follow-up meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) scheduled for December 3rd. The discussions focused on the following key demands:
- Statehood: Advocating for the restoration of democracy in Ladakh by granting statehood to ensure people’s participation in governance, administrative efficiency, better governance and economic development.
- 6th Schedule: Pushing for Ladakh’s inclusion under the 6th Schedule for greater autonomy, cultural identities, environmental preservation and protection of tribal rights.
- Public Service Commission & Recruitment: Urging the establishment of a Public Service Commission for Ladakh and expedited recruitment of gazetted officers to address administrative needs.
- Separate Lok Sabha Seats for Leh & Kargil: Demanding increased parliamentary representation by securing additional Lok Sabha seat for Ladakh.
The Apex Body and KDA remain steadfast in their commitment to these four critical demands of Ladakh. They emphasized the need for a constructive dialogue with the MHA on December 3rd, with the expectation that the ministry will engage positively. They also anticipate that subsequent meetings will be scheduled promptly to ensure meaningful and timely progress on these issues.
