New Post Office Act 2023 comes into effect from June 18

The government has passed the Post Office Act of 2023, aiming to streamline the delivery of citizen-centric services and extend government benefits to the country’s most remote areas, thereby improving the quality of life. This legislation will modernize India’s framework for postal services and stamp duties.

The Post Office Bill, 2023

The Government of India has enacted the Post Office Act, 2023, which aims to modernize India’s legislative framework for postal services and stamp duty. The new law, which came into effect, seeks to simplify the delivery of citizen-centric services and extend government benefits to the remotest corners of the country, enhancing the ease of living.

The Post Office Bill, 2023 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, and was passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 4, 2023. The Bill was then considered and passed by the Lok Sabha on December 13, 2023, and December 18, 2023.

After receiving the President’s assent on December 24, 2023, the Act was published in the Gazette of India on the same day by the Ministry of Law & Justice (Legislative Department) for general information.

According to the Ministry of Communications, “The Act aims to create a simple legislative framework for the delivery of citizen-centric services, banking services, and the benefits of government schemes at the last mile. The Act removes provisions such as the exclusive privilege of collecting, processing, and delivering letters to enhance the ease of doing business and ease of living.” The Ministry added, “No penal provisions have been prescribed in the Act. This provides a framework for prescribing standards for addressing items, address identifiers, and the usage of postcodes.”
