Sheikh Nazir Raises Concerns Over Alleged Discrimination in GI Tag Allocation

VoL Desk, Nov. 26: President of Jamiatul Ulma Isna Ashriya, Kargil, Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, expressed dissatisfaction over alleged discrimination in the allocation of Geographical Indication (GI) tags for Ladakh’s products.

Sheikh Nazir pointed out the discrepancy, stating that while GI tags were granted to products in other regions, Kargil was overlooked for its renowned products.

He also urged the UT Ladakh administration to prioritize languages associated with Kargil, particularly in the recruitment of teachers for Urdu and Arabic in the school education department. He alleged that only teachers for Bhoti language were made while not recruiting the vacant posts for teachers in Urdu and Arabic languages.

Earlier, JUIAK member Sajjad Kargil, in a video statement, asserted that the UT administration had repeatedly discriminated against Kargil.

Addressing the GI tag matter, he clarified that he harbored no objections to the recognition of wood carving and Pashmina, as these are primarily manufactured in the Leh district.

However, he expressed concern that the GI tag for Rakchay apricot, which is mainly produced in Leh district in limited quantities, was granted instead of Kargil’s key product, the Halman apricot, accounting for 70% of total apricot production.
