Kargil, September 21, 2026: In a significant stride towards strengthening women-led sustainable agriculture in Ladakh the Department of Agriculture Kargil UT Ladakh successfully concluded a 05-day within-district farmer training programme under the Sub-Mission on Agriculture Extension (SMAE) 2026-27. The programme witnessed the active participation of 50 women farmers from Darss and Zanskar districts of UT Ladakh.

The training was designed as a dynamic blend of theoretical learning, demonstrations and hands-on practical exposure aimed at inspiring women farmers to adopt new technologies innovations and agri-enterprises for income generation and sustainable farming in the region.

During the programme participants visited a host of premier agricultural and allied institutions including the School of Agriculture Science and Technology Kargil, Krishi Vigyan Kendra-I Kargil, LOGIC Fruit Plant Nursery Kanoor, The Fruit Growers Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society Ltd. Kargil, Button and Oyster Mushroom Production Units at Chanigond and Wakha Kargil, a local Bakery Manufacturing Unit at Pashkum, departmental beekeeping site and agricultural farms.

During the training programme the women farmers were exposed to valuable theoretical and practical knowledge on modern cultivation techniques horticulture nursery management plant propagation mushroom production beekeeping value addition post-harvest management food processing and marketing and organic farming practices.

During the training the farmers also received practical demonstrations conducted by officers of the department on the formulation of Jeevamrit and Ghanjeevamrit for maintaining soil health and fertility under organic and natural farming systems which encouraged them to embrace eco-friendly cost-effective and sustainable practices in Ladakh conditions.

The farmers also attended the two-day Exhibition-cum-Kisan Mela 2026 at Kargil which provided them a vibrant platform to interact with experts witness the latest agricultural technologies and innovations and exchange knowledge with fellow farmers.

The Department of Agriculture Kargil reaffirmed its commitment to empowering farmers especially women by equipping them with skills knowledge and confidence to become agents of change in the agricultural landscape of the Union Territory of Ladakh under the SMAE scheme. The initiative is expected to catalyse the adoption of innovative organic and income-oriented farming practices in the region.
