Kargil, August 2/ VOL News Desk/ A cloudburst and heavy rainfall on Sunday evening triggered a dangerous flash flood in Hardass village, a border area of Kargil known for its apricot production. The floodwaters passed through the stream instead of the residential area, preventing any major loss of life or property.

According to sources, the sudden downpour caused a massive flood carrying mud, rocks, and large boulders through the Hardass stream. Residents living near the stream evacuated their homes as a precaution.

No casualties have been reported. However, drinking water pipelines and agricultural irrigation channels have reportedly been damaged.

Sources said the flood carried a large amount of mud, stones, and debris. Since Hardass is a border village, there are concerns that underground landmines installed for border defence may also have been washed into the stream. As a precaution, the Army has restricted public access to the stream and nearby areas and urged residents to strictly follow safety advisories.

Local sources also stated that trees and other obstructions in parts of the stream had narrowed its course, affecting the flow of floodwaters. Residents have called for regular cleaning of streams and the removal of encroachments to reduce future risks.

Meanwhile, the stream in the Mail Sot area also witnessed a sudden rise in water level, causing a brief flood-like situation. However, no loss of life or property has been reported there.

The administration and concerned departments are continuously monitoring the situation and have appealed to the public to avoid visiting streams, flood-prone areas, and affected locations unnecessarily, and to follow official safety instructions.
