Kargil, August 12, 2026/ VOL News Desk/ Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, IAS, today chaired a meeting on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at his office chamber to review measures for curbing drug abuse and strengthening awareness and prevention efforts across the district.

The meeting was attended by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, District Social Welfare Officer, DySP DAR, District Tuberculosis Officer, besides representatives of various religious organisations.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner directed the Police Department to adopt strict and effective measures to curb both the demand and supply of drugs. He stressed the need for stringent action against those involved in drug-related activities as per the provisions of law. He also called for identification and seizure of properties acquired through proceeds of drug-related activities, wherever legally applicable.

Representatives of religious organisations put forth several suggestions for strengthening rehabilitation and prevention efforts. They suggested greater focus on counselling, vocational training and engaging recovering individuals in sports and other productive activities to facilitate their social reintegration.

The Deputy Commissioner urged religious organisations to make a unanimous appeal against drug abuse through Friday sermons, with a focus on creating awareness among youth and families about the harmful consequences of substance abuse.

He further suggested that religious organisations prepare a list of scholars from different villages who could be trained on the scientific aspects, warning signs and symptoms of drug abuse. These trained scholars could subsequently work as Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) at village and sub-divisional levels, thereby creating a wider network of awareness and prevention against drug abuse.

The meeting also discussed various other measures, including preparation of video awareness messages, organising mass rallies, conducting awareness lectures on different platforms and intensifying drug-abuse awareness programmes in schools and educational institutions.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasised that a coordinated effort involving administration, police, religious organisations, educational institutions, civil society and the community is essential to build a drug-free Kargil and protect the younger generation from the menace of substance abuse.
