Residents in Sankoo’s Lankerchey Raise Alarm Over Rotten Wooden Roof Beams, Seek Urgent Probe

Kargil, July 27, 2026/ VOL News Desk/ Residents of Lankerchey village and adjoining areas in the Sankoo subdivision of Kargil district have expressed serious concern after discovering that wooden beams installed in the roofs of several homes have been severely damaged by insect infestation and rot.

According to locals, the issue has weakened the structural integrity of many houses, raising fears of potential roof collapses and posing risks to life and property. A resident from Lankerchey shared a video showing the condition of the beams inside a house, where the wood appears hollowed out and extensively decayed due to insect damage. The visuals indicate a significant loss of strength, casting doubt on the durability of the affected structures.

Residents said the problem is not confined to a single household but has been observed in several homes across the area. They warned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, it could lead to accidents, including roof collapses.

One local explained that in many houses, plywood is installed beneath the wooden beams for interior finishing, which conceals the actual condition of the wood. The damage often comes to light only after the plywood is removed, revealing that the beams have deteriorated internally due to infestation.
Residents have urged the Forest Department and other concerned authorities to carry out an immediate technical inspection to determine the cause of the sudden decay and insect infestation. They have also called for preventive measures to avoid similar issues in the future.

In addition, locals have appealed to residents in the area to inspect their roofs without delay, especially in homes where beams are covered with plywood. They advised replacing any weakened or damaged wood to prevent possible mishaps.

Traditional houses in Ladakh are typically constructed using wooden beams, shrubs, and mud, a method that helps retain warmth during harsh winters. However, any compromise in the strength of these foundational wooden elements can endanger the entire structure.

Residents emphasised that timely expert assessment and increased public awareness are essential to prevent any untoward incidents.
