KVK Kargil Celebrates “Melon Day” to Promote Local Farmers and Sustainable Farming
Melon Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and community participation at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kargil. The event aimed to highlight the nutritional value, economic importance, and cultural relevance of melons, as well as to promote local farmers and their produce. The celebration brought together farmers, horticulture experts, and the general public. Activities included a melon exhibition showcasing different varieties, melon-tasting sessions, and interactive awareness programs on sustainable cultivation practices. The event was graced by Hon’ble Executive Councillor Agriculture Syed Mujtaba as chief guest. Dean School of Agriculture Science and Technology Dr Faizan and Chief Horticulture Officer Mr Raza were invited distinguished guests. The guests were welcomed with a traditional Khattak by Dr Nasreen Fatima, Senior scientist and Head KVK Kargil. The event commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the field, marking its formal inauguration. The chief guest graced the occasion by promoting the fruit through the symbolic first harvest, carried out with his august hands. Later on a formal introductory programme took place in the training hall. Dr. Mansoor Hussain, Scientist, welcomed all the participants to the programme and briefly outlined its aims and objectives. He highlighted the pivotal role of KVK in the successful cultivation and revival of the fruit, which had otherwise disappeared from farmers’ fields. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, said that “Melon is not only a refreshing summer fruit but also a source of livelihood for many local farmers. Through events like this, we aim to encourage healthy eating and support agricultural communities”. He appreciated KVK’s role in promoting the fruit and highlighted his department’s contribution towards supporting the farming community. The event also featured expert talks on melon farming techniques and market linkages. The event also marked the concluding ceremony of the ten-day training on apricot value addition, where the trainees showcased their products. The programme concluded with formal vote of thanks by Dr Nasreen Fatima, Senior scientist and Head KVK Kargil.
