Kabaddi Nala Closure: Administration Prioritizes Public Safety Amid Landslide Risks

Kargil, March 15, 2025: In view of the notice issued by Municipal Committee, Kargil ply of vehicles and pedestrians have been strictly discouraged at the Kabaddi Nala, Kargil due to risk of landslides. Meanwhile, shopkeepers at Kabadi Nallah have reported significant business losses due to the area’s closure for the past three days. Many have urged the administration to expedite decision-making and implement immediate measures to safeguard their livelihoods.

The Municipal Committee, Kargil has raised concerns over the vulnerability of slopes at Kabaddi Nallah (from Fatima Chowk to Afzal Guest House) due to excessive wastewater seepage, rainfall, and melting snow. The administration has urged residents and shopkeepers in the area to remain vigilant and immediately report any signs of landslides or natural hazards to the authorities.

Additionally, the public has been advised to avoid traveling on the upper Lchangchik Road (towards and from the MES area) due to the hazards posed by recent snowfall and unstable terrain. Only essential and emergency service vehicles, including ambulances, fire service vehicles, and PHE water tankers, are permitted on this route. Parking on slide-prone sections has also been strictly discouraged to prevent accidents.

Raising the demands of the shopkeepers Voice of Ladakh pursued the officials in Kargil Administration. A top source from Administration informed that. to address the situation at Kabadi Nallah, District Magistrate Kargil, Sh. Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, IAS, convened a meeting today with officials to discuss long-term solutions. The administration remains committed to public safety and is actively working toward an effective and sustainable resolution.

A major decision regarding the closure of Kabadi Nallah is expected within the next 3–4 days, following an on-ground assessment by a geology expert from NIT Srinagar. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared, and necessary modifications will be made based on the expert’s recommendations. The source from Administration confirmed that authorities are working on a permanent solution to mitigate risks and prevent future disruptions.

The Kargil administration appeals for public cooperation in minimizing risks and ensuring community safety. The Municipal Committee, Kargil, under the leadership of Administrator Kacho Imteeaz, has assured swift action in response to any reported hazards.
