LG Mishra chairs Governing Body Meeting of State Health Society NHM Ladakh

Leh, 24 January, 2024: A meeting of the Governing Body of the State Health Society (SHS) NHM UT of Ladakh was chaired under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) at Lt Governor’s Secretariat. The meeting comprehensively reviewed the progress made on various healthcare initiatives in the Union Territory of Ladakh and deliberated on the plans for future developments.

During the meeting, significant emphasis was placed on the reduction of the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Ladakh. The UT of Ladakh is steadfastly committed to reducing the IMR to a single digit. Strategies to achieve this ambitious target were discussed, including conducting facility-level death audits to identify and address gaps in healthcare delivery.

A noteworthy development discussed at the meeting was the establishment of a Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) for cardiac procedures at the SNM Hospital and District Hospital, Kargil. This facility is slated to be operational by May 2025 and is expected to significantly enhance access to critical cardiac care for the residents of Ladakh.

The meeting also approved several proposals aimed at increasing the availability of specialist doctors in the region. This will be achieved through the introduction of diploma courses and upskilling programs for existing doctors, thereby addressing the shortage of specialist medical professionals.

In a significant move to alleviate the financial burden on patients, the UT government has implemented a policy providing free diagnostic services, including CT scans, MRIs, and lab tests, at government hospitals. This initiative has already resulted in a substantial reduction in the out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

The progress towards achieving universal health coverage in Ladakh was another key topic of discussion. The government is actively working towards enrolling all eligible residents under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission scheme, ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for the population.

Other initiatives discussed during the meeting included the upgradation of maternity healthcare facilities, the training of paramedics and doctors, the establishment of pediatric care centers, and the expansion of telemedicine services. These measures are aimed at further strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in Ladakh.

The Governing Body expressed satisfaction with the progress made on various healthcare initiatives and pledged to continue working towards improving the health outcomes for the people of Ladakh. The meeting also addressed challenges faced by the health department, such as manpower shortages and internet connectivity issues in remote areas.

The Governing Body sought the support of public representatives in encouraging people to participate in preventive healthcare programs and annual checkups. This collaborative approach is expected to foster greater community involvement in healthcare initiatives.
