Animal Husbandry Kargil Launches High-Yield Jersey Cow Distribution Program

In Ladakh, to enhance rural livelihoods and promote sustainable development, Animal Husbandry Department, Kargil, launched the Induction and Distribution Program for High-Yielding Crossbred Jersey Cows at the Cattle Breeding Farm, Kurbathang.The program was inaugurated by Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, who handed over the first batch of five Jersey cows to beneficiaries, along with certificates, marking the commencement of the program’s first phase. This phase includes the distribution of 39 cows, with the total sanctioned number reaching 150 crossbred cows.Dr. Akhoon, addressing the gathering, highlighted the program’s significance for the district, where cattle rearing has been a cornerstone of livelihoods for generations. “Boosting the livestock sector will directly benefit farmers and ensure economic progress for Kargil,” he remarked. He also extended his gratitude to LG Ladakh and the Secretary of Animal Husbandry Ladakh for sanctioning this vital project, which aligns with LAHDC Kargil’s mission of sustainable economic development.The Chief Executive Councillor praised the schemes of Rarzi and Barzi for grazing cattle under subsidy component, emphasizing their role in improving livestock quality. He also noted the success of milk production schemes, which have greatly benefited both farmers and consumers in Kargil.Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil, said that the high-yielding Jersey cows being distributed are expected to produce a minimum of 8 to 10 liters of milk per day, significantly contributing to the district’s overall milk production, which currently stands at aprox 48,000 liters per day.To further support the farmers, the department is, Providing 90% subsidy on the cost of each cow, Supplying feed and supplements along with the cows and is offering one-year insurance for every cow to safeguard farmer investments.Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, appreciating the affordability and quality of the crossbred cows. One farmer said, “This effort by the department provides us with a great opportunity to improve our livelihood and contribute to the local economy.”This initiative marks a pivotal step in empowering rural communities and enhancing Kargil’s agricultural economy, setting the stage for sustainable growth in the region.
