Kargil Night Musical Event Halted Amid Controversy
VoL Desk, September 16, 2024: A musical and cultural event titled “Kargil Night,” organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism, UT Ladakh, was abruptly halted following objections raised by Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, President of Jamiat ul Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil. The event, which had CEC Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone as the Chief Guest, was scheduled to showcase cultural performances, including traditional dances and songs by prominent Ladakhi artists.
In an audio message circulated on social media, Sheikh Nazir called the event “immoral” and accused it of misleading the youth of Kargil. He appealed to the public to gather at Islamia School Chowk and march to the event venue at Biamathang to demand an immediate halt to the performances.
Videos shared on social media show crowds assembling at Islamia School Chowk, chanting slogans against the administration for permitting such events. Sheikh Nazir claimed that the event was promoting immorality, leading to a degradation of cultural values and negative influences on the behavior of Kargil’s youth.
