Apex Body Leh Holds Press Conference, Expresses Regret Over Thupstan Chhewang’s Statements, Calls for Unity

Leh, May 5/ VOL News Desk/ The Apex Body Leh held an important press conference yesterday, expressing deep regret over the recent activities and statements of its former head and ex-Member of Parliament, Thupstan Chhewang. Leaders stated that his remarks were contrary to the collective interests and agreed position of the Apex Body, causing concern among the public.

Addressing the media, speakers recalled that after Ladakh was granted the status of a Union Territory in 2019, Thupstan Chhewang himself had founded the Apex Body in 2021 to address key regional issues—particularly land, employment, and the protection of the fragile environment. Through dialogue with Kargil leadership, a joint platform was formed to effectively raise public concerns before the Central Government.

However, according to the leaders, over the past year, Thupstan Chhewang has remained absent from key meetings of the Apex Body and has, on several occasions, made statements that contradict the organization’s collective stance. Concerns were specifically raised regarding his position on the possible privatization of the Ladakh Power Development Department, as well as remarks made by a minority member of the Kargil Democratic Alliance during a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs, which were said to be at odds with the joint position of the Apex Body and KDA.

It was also revealed during the press conference that Thupstan Chhewang had formally announced his resignation from both the chairmanship and membership of the Apex Body last year. However, members of the organization had requested him to continue contributing at least as a member if he was unable to fulfil the responsibilities of the chairman due to age or other reasons.

Emphasizing the need for unity among Ladakh’s leadership, the speakers said that solidarity is the key to success under the current circumstances. They appealed to Thupstan Chhewang and former minister Rigzin Jora to refrain from making statements against the Apex Body, even if they are unable to attend its meetings.

It is noteworthy that over the past year, Thupstan Chhewang has not only stayed away from Apex Body meetings but has also remained absent from important meetings of the High-Powered Committee, leading to speculation and concern among the people of Ladakh.
