New Body “Voice of Buddhist Ladakh” Formed to Safeguard Community Interests

Leh, January 03, 2026/ VOL News Desk/ Prominent Buddhist leaders, youth, and women from across Ladakh have established the “Voice of Buddhist Ladakh” (VBL) to amplify their concerns amid ongoing dialogues with the central government.

Since Ladakh was declared a Union Territory in 2019, widespread apprehensions have emerged among residents about protecting land, culture, environment, youth employment, and the lack of public representation in governance. To address these, a High Powered Committee (HPC) was formed to engage with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India.

Under-representation of the Buddhist community in the HPC has led to draft proposals from the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance that “undermine Buddhist interests in the region”.

The VBL was formally launched on January 1, 2026, in Leh, with the goal of conveying the Buddhist community’s perspective directly to the MHA. This ensures that any decisions arising from the dialogues consider the community’s voice for a balanced future.

Shri Skarma Namtak Achinathang has been unanimously elected as Convenor. He will liaise with key bodies, including the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), Leh Apex Body (LAB), HPC, UT Ladakh administration, and MHA, on all relevant issues.
