Rally Demands Sonam Wangchuk’s Release and Sixth Schedule for Ladakh
Chandigarh, October 12/ VOL News Desk/ The All Ladakh Students Welfare Association Chandigarh (ALSWAC) and Fridays For Future, Chandigarh Chapter, in a peaceful rally today demanding the immediate release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.
Students, environmentalists and concerned citizens raised their voices against the shrinking democratic and ecological space in the region. The rally highlighted how unregulated development in Ladakh threatens glaciers, water sources, and fragile ecosystems.
Mohammad Idrees Aba, President of ALSWAC, said,
“The demand for Sixth Schedule is about safeguarding Ladakh’s future. Without constitutional protection and representation, decisions over our land and resources are being taken without us. That must change.”

ALSWAC reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic action and called on the Union Government to respect Ladakh’s aspirations for environmental protection, local autonomy, and representation. The rally concluded with a united appeal for Sonam Wangchuk’s release and stronger safeguards for Ladakh’s people and ecology.
