By S.H. Rizvi | Kargil | September 26: Environmentalist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody today by the Ladakh Police. Following this development, the Kargil district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023 to maintain law and order.
According to the announcement made this afternoon through loudspeakers, gatherings of five or more people have been banned in Kargil until further notice. The administration has also made prior written permission mandatory for holding any procession, rally, or march. Meanwhile, a heavy deployment of security forces has been placed across the district to prevent any untoward incident.
In Leh district, curfew remains in force since September 24. The restrictions were imposed after protests led by the Apex Body demanding the restoration of statehood to Ladakh turned tense.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in an official statement, accused Sonam Wangchuk of delivering inflammatory speeches that allegedly incited the crowd during the September 24 protest rally in Leh, which escalated tensions in the region.
Officials emphasized that the latest measures are aimed at preventing further disturbances and ensuring peace in the union territory.
