From Heights to Healing: Fostering Mental Health Awareness in Leh

In today’s modern and technological era, rapid lifestyle changes have led to an increase in mental health problems. It is crucial for everyone to be aware of mental health and potential issues. World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, serves as an important opportunity to highlight the significance of mental health awareness. This day encourages individuals to recognize the need for mental well-being and to pay attention to the availability of mental health resources. It advocates for dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health issues, allowing people to seek help without fear.

Negative thoughts, anxiety, fear, stress, and a tendency to over think can severely impact our mental health. In today’s fast-paced life, people often forget to pay attention to their health, especially mental health, leading to serious conditions like depression. Alarmingly, there has been a consistent rise in cases of serious mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, and OCD.

Neglecting mental health issues can be dangerous. If you feel abnormal or are facing a mental problem, it is essential to communicate openly with your family and friends. Timely identification of problems and seeking appropriate treatment are important for improving mental health. Maintaining mental well-being requires a balanced diet, mindfulness practices, yoga, regular exercise, pursuing hobbies, and getting sufficient sleep, all of which can enhance both physical and mental health.

Understanding the mental health situation of people living in high-altitude areas like Leh is necessary. A recent research study found that particularly female students face mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, overthinking, depression, panic attacks, and hallucinations. Several factors contribute to this, including emotional vulnerabilities, social pressure, excessive use of smartphones and social media, parental pressure for good grades, poor time management, and substance abuse. Additionally, psychological and physiological issues related to high altitude, such as hypoxia, can also lead to symptoms of anxiety and panic.

Conversely, the tranquil environment of mountainous and rural areas, along with physical activities and participation in communal tasks, can enhance mental health. The role of parents is particularly significant in this context. They should be informed and educated to provide a supportive environment for their children. Recognizing and supporting children’s psychological and emotional states is essential. Building friendly relationships and spending quality time can help them cope with their challenges.

Parents and teachers must ensure that fear and self-loathing do not develop in children. It is important to address children’s mistakes, but excessive criticism should be avoided to prevent feelings of worthlessness. Encouraging self-confidence can lead children toward a more purposeful life. Ultimately, mental health must be regarded with the same seriousness as physical health. We must collectively address these issues, promote open dialogue, and support one another to foster a healthy and resilient society.
