Sankoo Sub-Division Representatives Demand District Status and Full-Fledged College

VoL Desk, August 14: Public representatives of Sankoo Sub-Division held a press conference to reiterate their long-standing demands for district status and the establishment of a full-fledged college in the region.

The press conference was attended by prominent figures including CEC, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone; Executive Councillor Aga Syed Mujtaba; Councillor Gond Mangal Pore Aga Syed Ali; Councillor Barsoo, Sheikh Mohd Ansari; former Councillor Sankoo, Syed Ahmad Rizvi; Councillor Suru Abdul Hadi; Councillor Saliskote Mohd Sajjad Khan; Councillor Parkachik Aga Ainul Huda; former EC Aga Syed Abass; and representative of Anjuman Inqilab Mehdi Suru, Aga Najmul Hasan, among others.

Aga Syed Ahmad, who initiated the press conference, provided a detailed overview of the region’s two major demands. He emphasized that Sankoo Sub-Division, which stretches from Trespone to Rangdum, is the most populated sub-division in the entire Union Territory of Ladakh and is located over 40 kilometers from the district headquarters.

Recently, the region witnessed protests in Sankoo town, where residents demanded district status and the establishment of a full-fledged college. Syed Ahmad appealed to the Government of India, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to address these demands.

CEC Dr. Jaffar, addressing the media, acknowledged circulating reports about the possible creation of new districts in Ladakh. While stating that they have no objections to granting district status to other regions, he emphasized that there should be clear criteria for such decisions. He further noted that Sankoo Sub-Division, comprising four blocks, is the most densely populated area in Ladakh after the Kargil district headquarters.
