GDC Drass organizes awareness program on gender sensitization, registration drive for scholarship

Kargil, July 31, 2024: Government Degree College Drass in collaboration with Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, organized an awareness program on “Gender Sensitization, Encouraging Sports and Ending Sports-related stigma among girls and registration drive for Scholarship Scheme.

The event featured resource persons that includes Aamina Banoo, Gender Expert from Mission Shakti, and Mansoor Hussain, Scholarship Dealing Assistant from UT Ladakh.

The program commenced with the traditional welcome of guests with khataqs and a welcome note by the college Principal Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi. In his address, Dr. Amjad Ali emphasized the importance of such events and highlighted the need for men to be sensitized on women’s rights, as well as the significance of scholarship schemes.

Resource Person, Aamina Bano delivered a detailed presentation on the distinction between gender and sex, explaining how society constructs roles based on sex, leading to gender formation.

She addressed issues of gender bias and discrimination in various settings, such as home and the workplace. Furthermore, she underscored the importance of women’s education and empowerment, discussing various schemes available for women, including the One Stop Centre Scheme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, legal assistance, counseling, the Women Helpline Scheme, and Mahila e-Haat Scheme.

Mansoor Hussain elaborated social and tribal welfare schemes, highlighting that 50% of these schemes are reserved for girls. He provided information on the Minority Scholarship, Pre and Post Matric Scholarships, Rewa Scholarship, and guided students on the registration process for both renewal and new scholarship applications.

The program also included a question-and-answer session. The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Shabana Bashir, student of third-Semester. The program proceedings were conducted by Noor Jahan, student of 5th Semester.
