AKSAD express resentment against closure of, Sankoo Campus, GDC Kargil
VoL Desk, June 24: The decision of the UT Administration regarding the closure of the Sankoo Campus of Government Degree College, Kargil has raised concern among various students’ association of the District. The associations have through press conference and media bites expressed resentment against the Administration’s decision to close the Sankoo Campus.
Expressing disagreement, the All Kargil Students’ Association Delhi (AKSAD) has wrote a letter to the Lieutenant Governor of UT, Ladakh, Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) highlighting the potential impact of the decision on the career of the underprivileged students particularly girls.
The letter to the LG Ladakh read that we, the All Kargil (Ladakh) Students’ Association Delhi (AKSAD), are deeply concerned about the integration of Degree College Sankoo into the University of Ladakh (Kargil Campus). We work closely with students both within and outside Ladakh and believe that the recent decision by the University of Ladakh was unfortunate and made without considering the stakeholders’ opinions.

This decision could severely impact many underprivileged students, particularly girls. Daily commutes of 40 to 50 kilometers might create significant barriers to education due to safety concerns, financial constraints, and societal pressures. For girls, these challenges could limit access to higher education opportunities, restricting their academic and personal development.
Moreover, the rationale provided by the University of Ladakh regarding this matter does not align with the UGC guidelines. There are no UGC guidelines that prohibit the establishment of a college near a university campus.
In this regard, AKSAD has requested the LG to intervene personally so that the higher education of students from remote areas is not hindered. “We believe that under the UT administration, higher education has flourished in Ladakh, and this single arbitrary decision should not become a source of public resentment”, stated the letter.
