LAHDC, Kargil to stage Protest if two-way traffic is not allowed on Zojila

VoL Desk, May 22: The LAHDC Kargil has issued a warning to the UT administration, stating that the council will stage a protest if two-way traffic is not permitted on the Zojila Pass within a few days. This statement was made by the Chief Executive Councillor Kargil, Dr. Jaffar Akhoon while talking to media.

Dr. Akhoon said that, despite the session being halfway through, the UT administration has yet to open NH01 for two-way traffic. This delay has caused significant inconvenience not only for passengers and taxi drivers but also for hoteliers who are suffering from a lack of tourists in the district.

He mentioned that after the recent elections, he wrote a letter to Dr. Pawan Kotwal, the Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, pointing out that while the road from Sonamarg to Zero Point is open for two-way traffic for non-locals, this privilege is not extended to locals.

Dr. Akhoon emphasized that the Zojila Pass road has been widened, yet it remains restricted to one-way traffic. He warned that if swift action is not taken, the council will organize a protest at Sonamarg or at Zojila, highlighting that this issue directly affects the livelihood of local residents.

He also stated that a request has been made to the District Magistrate of Ganderbal for permission to hold the protest.
