VoL Desk, April 15: Opposition party councilors in Leh have voiced their concerns during a recent press conference regarding the registration process for hotels under the tourism policy, highlighting the absence of mandatory Ladakh Residential Certification (LRC). Emphasizing the significance of Ladakh’s inclusion in the sixth schedule of the constitution, the District Congress Committee reiterated the necessity to address this issue promptly.

They pointed out that since Ladakh attained the status of a Union Territory, there has been a notable influx of outsiders dominating various sectors including land ownership, employment, trade, and tourism. They underscored that the implementation of the sixth schedule is crucial to prevent this trend.
Given that Ladakh’s economy heavily relies on tourism, they expressed worry over the UT Administration’s decision not to mandate LRC for hotel registration, potentially jeopardizing local employment opportunities.

It was highlighted that prior to the UT’s formation, Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) was a prerequisite for hotel registration. The Congress councilors have urged both the Hill Council Leh and the UT Administration to enforce the requirement of LRC for hotel registrations, stressing the urgency of the matter. They emphasized the community’s steadfast determination to expedite efforts in addressing these pressing issues.
