Rising Unemployment in Ladakh Spurs Demand for Special Reservation for Scheduled Tribes

Kargil, Ladakh – June 12, 2025: With limited alternative employment and virtually no sustainable business opportunities in the remote region of Ladakh, members of the Yuva Karya Samiti Kargil have raised serious concerns over rising unemployment, especially among Scheduled Tribes. In a meeting held recently, the youth body appealed for the immediate implementation of special reservation provisions to secure livelihoods for the marginalized communities of the region.

Addressing the pressing concerns, the Secretary of the Confederation of Scheduled Tribe Associations attentively listened to the demands presented by the delegation. He expressed full solidarity with the cause and assured unwavering support to the youth of Kargil in their ongoing fight for constitutional rights and inclusive development.

The Kargil unit of the Confederation also pledged its full cooperation in advancing the “Reservation Bachao” agenda, emphasizing the need to safeguard the hard-won rights of Scheduled Tribes in Ladakh, who often face systemic exclusion due to geographical and infrastructural constraints.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, Mohammad Salim Khan, spokesperson of the Youth Action Committee Kargil, along with committee member Mohammad Ali and others, extended heartfelt gratitude to the visiting dignitaries. They lauded the Confederation’s relentless efforts on behalf of the downtrodden and reiterated their commitment to continue supporting initiatives rooted in the vision of Baba Saheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

“The dream of social justice and equality lives on through our collective action,” Khan said, underlining the critical need for targeted policy interventions that address the unique challenges of Ladakh’s tribal communities.

As the call for reservation gains momentum in the region, local stakeholders hope that the central and union territory administrations will take note and act promptly to ensure equitable development across Ladakh.
