Central Silk Board Advances Sericulture Project in Kargil

Kargil, May 31, 2025 – Scientist-D Gulzar Ahmad Khan from the Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI), Gallander Pampore, under the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, along with two progressive farmers, Murtaza Ali and Manzoor Hussain, met with Executive Councilor for Social Welfare/Agriculture/Animal & Sheep Husbandry/ICDS, LAHDC, Kargil, Aga Sayeed Mujtaba Mussavi, today.

During the meeting, the delegation discussed the development of mulberry sericulture in Kargil, focusing on a recently approved project by the Central Silk Board. The initiative aims to enhance mulberry cultivation and farmers’ skills in large-scale silkworm rearing to create sustainable livelihood opportunities in the district.

The Executive Councilor assured full support in establishing the necessary infrastructure for sericulture development in Kargil.

It was also highlighted that CSB, in collaboration with SKUAST-Kashmir, has previously conducted sericulture training programs and demonstrations for local farmers.

Later, Scientist Gulzar Ahmad Khan held detailed discussions with Prof. Faizan Ahmad (University of Ladakh), who provided valuable insights for planning sericulture projects in the region.

The delegation also met with Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho (JKAS), seeking administrative support for the effective implementation of the sericulture development project.
