Ladakh Bridge Washed Away Amidst Heatwave-Induced River Swelling

Leh, May 28 – Like the rest of the country, the Union Territory of Ladakh has witnessed an unusual surge in temperatures during the last week of May, leading to dangerously high water levels in local streams and rivers. Experts attribute this situation to the effects of climate change.

According to reports, several areas of Ladakh, particularly Kargil and its surrounding villages, have experienced a sharp rise in temperatures, causing glaciers to melt rapidly. This has directly impacted local water bodies, streams, and especially the Indus River, where a sudden and severe increase in water flow has been recorded.

Sources indicate that due to the swelling of the Indus River, a crucial bridge in Dargo village of the Shakar-Chiktan subdivision—which served as a vital link between Kargil and Leh—was completely washed away this morning by the strong current. As a result, ground connectivity between Dargo and Achanathang Hanu has been severed, leaving locals facing severe difficulties.

Meanwhile, the Suru River and its tributaries have also seen a rise in water flow, increasing risks in the region. The rapid water movement has raised concerns about potential flooding in several low-lying areas.

The local administration have advised residents living near rivers and streams to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary proximity to water bodies. Rescue teams have been put on alert, and alternative routes are being explored to restore connectivity.

The Meteorological Department has predicted further heatwaves in the coming days, which could worsen the situation. Authorities have urged the public to immediately contact the district control room or nearest police station in case of any emergency.
