Farmers’ Day celebrated at Barsoo by KVK Kargil-II

Kargil, Dec 23, 2024: KVK Kargil-II today celebrated Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) at Barsoo commemorating the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India, known as the “Champion of India’s Farmers.”

The day acknowledges the significant contributions of farmers towards the Indian economy and highlights the challenges they face with the theme “Empowering farmers for sustainable agriculture.”

The event was graced by Councilor of Barsoo Constituency, LAHDC Kargil, Sheikh Mohd Ansari as the chief guest. Officers from allied departments including Chief Agriculture Officer, Ashiq Hussain Basharat was the guest of honour, Dr. Siraj Ud Din, Block Veterinary Officer (Sankoo) and Liqat Ali, were present on the occasion.

Dr. Siraj Ud Din addressed the farmers on livestock-related issues and emphasized the importance of livestock in enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring livelihood security for tribal farmers in remote areas. He highlighted the crucial role livestock plays in sustaining agricultural land and boosting farmers’ economic conditions.

Ashiq Hussain briefed the participants on advanced agricultural practices, particularly the introduction of high-yield seed varieties for fodder crops. He underlined the correlation between quality fodder, livestock health, and increased production of meat and milk. Additionally, he provided insights into modern cultural practices aimed at maximizing agricultural output and contributing to India’s GDP and employment.

Dr. Mehdi, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil-II, spoke about the benefits of protected cultivation, particularly the ability to grow vegetable crops during the off-season. He elaborated on the success of cultivating crops that are otherwise unviable under open-field conditions. Dr. Mehdi commended the farmers for their enthusiastic participation despite the harsh winter conditions.

Before the chief guest’s address, a comprehensive discussion was held between scientists, experts, and farmers. The Councilor, Sheikh Mohd Ansari, expressed his gratitude to the Scientist of KVK/officers for organizing the event and acknowledged the importance of adopting advanced agricultural technologies.

He also appreciated the livestock department for raising awareness and encouraged continued efforts to conduct training sessions, awareness programs, and initiatives to benefit the local farming community.

A total of 121 farmers participated in the event. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by a progressive farmer, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in making the event successful.
