Mass Resignation in Zanskar Over Alliance Decision; Not Mass but Few, says Congress Councillor

VoL Desk, August 08: The executive members of the Block Congress Committee, Padum, Zanskar of district Kargil, have collectively tendered their mass resignation today. However, sitting councilor from Zanskar, Stanzin Ala, revealed that the resignations are emanating from only one group within the Zanskar block.

The resignation comes amidst a backdrop of discontent and disagreement within the committee over the recent decision to form an alliance between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the National Conference (NC).

Led by Sh. Skalzang Wangyal Gara, Former Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil, and supported by Smt. Thinlay Angmo Sarpanch Padum and Block Congress Committee (BCC) Zanskar President Urgain Dorjay, the executive members cite a lack of consultation and transparency in the decision-making process as the primary reason for their collective resignation.

Vice President Sh. Tsering Angchuk Stara, Rigzin Dorjay Zangla, Sh. Ghulam Mohd Wani Padum, and Sr. Executive Member Haji Khadim Hussain Padum are among those who have joined the mass resignation.

The decision to form an alliance with the National Conference without consulting the grassroots members and workers is being described as “unethical” and “un-political” by the resigning members. They argue that this decision has deeply hurt the sentiments of the members and workers in the Zanskar Block/Padum Constituency of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil.

In response to the mass resignation, Stanzin Ala, a sitting councilor from Karsha, revealed that the resignations are emanating from only one group within the Zanskar block. He clarified that this represents only one faction of the larger Zanskar area, and numerous members remain affiliated with the Congress party.

Ala also noted that although members were consulted before the decision to align with the National Conference was made, confusion persists regarding the motives behind the resignation.
