CEC Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon Inaugurates Multiple Lift Irrigation Projects in Sankoo Subdivision

Kargil, June 20, 2025 – In a step towards strengthening the agricultural infrastructure of Kargil district, the Hon’ble Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, today inaugurated a series of Lift Irrigation Schemes at Stangkung, Lalung Thasgam, and Stakburik under the Sankoo Subdivision.

The inauguration ceremonies were held in the presence of local villagers, public representatives, and senior officials from multiple line departments including Irrigation & Flood Control, PHE, Mechanical, and PDD.

Addressing the gathering at Stangkung, Dr. Akhoon extended heartfelt gratitude to the executing agencies and their dedicated teams for successfully completing these critical projects that will enhance irrigation facilities, boost agricultural productivity, and directly benefit local farmers. He emphasized the importance of such infrastructure in ensuring sustainable development in remote regions.

Locals at the event expressed appreciation for the developmental efforts while also putting forth key demands including land compensation and construction of a link road. Responding empathetically, CEC Dr. Akhoon assured that all genuine demands will be addressed in a phased manner, and he directed Executive Engineer (Irrigation), Ghulam Hussain, to take immediate steps for the construction of a protection wall around the irrigation plant. He also instructed SDM Sankoo, Mohd Saleem, to look into the matters related to land compensation.

While interacting with residents at Stakburik, Dr. Akhoon congratulated the local community on the launch of the irrigation project and thanked all executing agencies for their collaborative efforts. In response to public demands for a water canal for extended irrigation and the CEC informed that tendering for the canal project is underway.

CEC Dr. Akhoon also visited the ongoing construction site of Imam Bargah Thasgam, where he reviewed progress and directed Executive Engineer R&B, Agah Syed Mehdi, to ensure timely completion of the work by October 2025, as committed, also visited Ghuntabcha village where people demanded suspension bridge and construction of community hall.

Throughout the visit, Dr. Akhoon held detailed discussions with the people of Stangkung, Lalung Thasgam, Stakburik, and adjoining villages, reaffirming LAHDC Kargil’s commitment to inclusive development, educational empowerment, and preservation of local heritage. He encouraged parents to prioritize their children’s education, highlighting it as a cornerstone of long-term progress.

Reiterating his commitment to public welfare, the CEC stated, “As promised, many of the core demands of these villages have already been fulfilled. Public service remains the primary objective of LAHDC Kargil, and we shall continue to work tirelessly in this noble mission.”

The event witnessed the participation of Chief Engineer PHE/ I&FC Mohammad Abass, Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Ghulam Hussain, Executive Engineer SVD Agah Syed Mehdi, Executive Engineer PDD Feroz Ahmed, Executive Engineer Mechanical Mohammad Hassan, and AEEs, JEs and former Councillor Abdul Rahim.
