CEC Leh Reviews Progress of New Terminal at KBR Airport, Lauds Team for Sustainable Infrastructure Efforts
Leh, May 2: Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson conducted a detailed review of the ongoing construction of the new Domestic Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche (KBR) Airport, Leh.
The visit was aimed at assessing the progress of works and the advanced sustainability features being incorporated into the terminal, which is expected to become a benchmark for modern and environment-friendly airport infrastructure in the country.
Spanning an area of 23,810 square meters, the new terminal is designed to handle up to 3.2 million passengers annually. It includes modern passenger facilities and will integrate India’s largest geothermal system along with solar power for energy efficiency, aligning with Ladakh’s vision of becoming a carbon-neutral region. The building has been planned as a 4-star GRIHA-rated energy-efficient structure and will reflect local Ladakhi aesthetics, blending culture with contemporary design.

A. Umasankar, Airport Director and General Manager, Airports Authority of India (AAI), briefed the Hon’ble CEC on the status of the construction and informed that the terminal is likely to be completed by the end of October 2025. He assured that all remaining works are progressing swiftly to meet the deadline.
The CEC appreciated the efforts of all agencies involved and acknowledged the hard work of the entire construction team for their commitment to quality and sustainability. It was also highlighted that this ambitious project, aligns with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform Ladakh.
Accompanying the CEC from the Airports Authority of India including the Joint General Manager, Assistant General Manager, Senior Manager, Resident Construction Manager and Assistant General Manager from Engineers India Limited (EIL), and the Assistant General Manager and Senior Manager from Shapoorji Pallonji Construction Pvt. Ltd. (SPCPL). From the UT Administration and allied departments, the Superintending Engineer, PWD Leh; Deputy Secretary, Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture & Languages; President, LGA; Vice President LBA; Executive Engineers of R&B Division, PHE, PDD, and LDA; Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Leh along with other concerned officials.
