Stray Dog Menace in Gongma Minji, Public in Distress, Authorities Silent

Kargil, March 09, 2025: In the Kargil district, the number of stray dogs has increased exponentially over the past few years, causing significant distress to residents in both urban and rural areas. These stray dogs are not only attacking pedestrians but also targeting livestock, resulting in both financial and physical losses for the locals.

The residents of Gongma Minji are particularly affected by this serious issue, where packs of stray dogs roam day and night, posing a constant threat to schoolchildren, women, and the elderly. These aggressive animals have also been responsible for the deaths of livestock on multiple occasions, adversely impacting the rural economy.

Following public complaints, the Voice of Ladakh had previously inquired with the relevant authorities about the issue, and the administration had assured that measures would be taken to control the stray dog population. However, the public claims that no concrete steps have been taken so far. The district council administration also held meetings with concerned officials to review the situation, but on the ground, the situation remains unchanged.

It is noteworthy that a decade ago, the Kargil district was completely free of stray dogs, and the cultural and social environment of the region discouraged the keeping of dogs. However, over the past few years, there has been an unusual increase in the number of stray dogs, ringing alarm bells for the human population.

According to some reports, these stray dogs are being transported in trucks from neighboring districts and released in deserted areas of Kargil during the night. If these claims are true, it is imperative for the government to immediately investigate the matter and put an end to this heinous practice.

Through the Voice of Ladakh, the residents of Gongma Minji are urgently appealing to the government to take serious and effective measures to resolve this issue. Otherwise, the public may be forced to take matters into their own hands for their safety, and the government will be held responsible for all ensuing consequences.
