EC Tashi visits Phuktal Monastery takes assessment of damages caused by rock fall
Kargil, March 24, 2025: Executive Councilor, RDD/PRI and Zanskar Development Authority LAHDC, Kargil, Er Punchok Tashi today took on-site assessment of the damages caused due to a recent rock fall at the historic Phuktal Monastery in Zanskar.
The rock fall, which occurred earlier this month, caused substantial harm to the monastery’s prayer hall and storeroom, as well as buried essential supplies under debris.
During his visit, Er. Punchok Tashi engaged with the monks and local representatives to understand their immediate needs and concerns. He assured them of the administration’s commitment to restoring the monastery and providing necessary relief measures.

The Executive Councilor emphasized the cultural and spiritual significance of the Phuktal Monastery, which has stood as a beacon of heritage and faith for centuries.
A detailed damage assessment report amounting to Rs 97 lakh has been prepared by Zanskar Development Authority and submitted to higher authority for approval,
Er. Punchok Tashi commended the swift response of the survey team and reiterated the LAHDC Kargil’s dedication to preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage. He also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the administration and local communities in overcoming challenges posed by natural calamities.
The Head Lama and Gehu of the monastery requested EC to provide them sufficient ration as the already stocked one is under the debris, beside they have requested to immediate snow clearance from their road.
They also requested the EC to expedite the construction of L/R from Skardongdho Phuktal to Shadey and for providing and installation of Solar Power plant for the monastery as they don’t have power supply till date.
Engineers of ZDA, R&B and Patwari from Revenue Department and other concerned officials accompanied the EC.
EC Tashi assured that no stone shall be left to renovate and strengthen the monastery, and all other issues shall be resolved in phased manner.
