Wildlife Institute of India Conducts River Conservation Awareness Campaigns in Kargil and Srinagar
Kargil, February 27, 2025: The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), under the flagship scheme of the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD), organized a public awareness campaign for rivers today at Andoo, Kargil, on the banks of the Suru River, a tributary of the Indus River.
The event in Kargil was conducted by WII’s Indus Team, with Mohd Kazim and Sayeeda Banoo serving as resource persons. School and college students from the nearby Bagh-e-Khomeini village participated in the campaign, where wildlife experts emphasized the importance of conserving river water. The resource persons advised participants to maintain clean water bodies and avoid disposing of garbage and waste near riverbanks.

Simultaneously, the Wildlife Institute of India conducted another awareness campaign in Srinagar near the Jhelum River. Students from Kargil Boys Hostel in Srinagar participated in the event. Dr. Mohd Raza, the resource person, highlighted the significance of conserving water bodies and their critical role in human life. He also explained how river conservation is vital for preserving the biosphere, particularly for wildlife dependent on aquatic ecosystems.

The National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, provides financial assistance on a cost-sharing basis to States and Union Territories for river conservation efforts across all river basins, except the Ganga and its tributaries.
