Ladakh Language Conflict: Imam Juma JUIA, IKMT Kargil raises concern over “Bhoti”

Kargil, December 20, 2024 – In their respective Friday sermons, Hajjat-ul-Islam Sheikh Hamid Nasiri and Hajjat-ul-Islam Sheikh Ibrahim Khalili addressed pressing social and administrative issues during gatherings organized by prominent religious organizations in Kargil.

Speaking at Musallah ya Imam Manji Gund under the management of Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust, Sheikh Hamid Nasiri expressed strong objections to the use of the word “Bhoti” for the language spoken in Ladakh that is also being considered to include in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that “Ladakhi” is the language of Ladakh and categorically stated, “We reject any other name for our language. The government must ensure that the language and culture of Ladakh are protected.”

Sheikh Nasiri also addressed concerns regarding recent social media reports alleging misconduct involving underage girls in residential hostels. He criticized the UT administration for the inadequate management of school hostels, which, according to him, has led to unfortunate incidents. He urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive, impartial investigation free of political influence and called for strict action against those  found guilty. Sheikh Nasiri also advised parents to ensure the safety and well-being of their children before sending them to residential facilities.

Meanwhile, addressing the congregation at a Friday prayer event organized by Jamiatul Ulama Kargil, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalili echoed similar concerns about the state of residential hostels for students of Class 10th and 12th. He called on the administration to improve hostel facilities, provide quality education, and ensure robust security measures. He emphasized the installation of CCTV cameras in all hostels to maintain accountability in case of any untoward incidents.

Sheikh Khalili also highlighted the inconvenience faced by residents due to the absence of a Passport Regional Office in Kargil. He urged the administration to address this issue immediately, noting that people currently have to travel to Leh or Srinagar to obtain passports, adding unnecessary burden to the local population. Both religious leaders called for immediate action and accountability from the administration to address these issues effectively.
