December 04, 2024: Administrator, Municipal Committee, Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho today inspected the Solid Waste Management Plant at Kurbathang, Kargil and reviewed the operationalization of the plant. He was accompanied by Executive Officer, Municipal Committee of Kargil, Aarifa Iqbal and other officials.At the site, the Project Manager of 3R Management Limited, Kapil Kant Niranjan briefed the Administrator and the MC team about the entire process of waste management at the plant. He also demonstrated the process of waste segregation, shredding, mixing, curing, storage, recycle, packing of waste resources, etc.The Project Manager also demonstrated the process of converting garbage into manure at the plant. It was informed that the plant has processed 123 tonnes of waste in the month of November, 2024.Other issues like manpower requirement and the need for using solar energy to run the plant were also discussed. Concerns were also raised about the presence of stones and sharp material in the garbage received at the plant as they could damage machinery parts. The Administrator assured that measures would be taken to bring about behavioural change among the citizens. Social media campaigns will also be launched to convey the message in a subtle manner, he added. The need to explore the adoption of waste segregation at source as a pilot project was also discussed.During his visit, the Administrator and the Executive Officer interacted with workers in the plant and appreciated their efforts towards ensuring efficient waste management practices. He appreciated the measures being taken at the plant site for scientific waste disposal and environmental conservation. Issues regarding the landfill site were also discussed threadbare.
