Police Commemoration Day 2024: LG Felicitates families of martyrs and Hot Spring survivors
Leh, Oct 21, 2024: The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) attended the function organised by Ladakh Police to celebrate Police Commemoration Day at Parade Ground, District Police Line, Leh. Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 to honour the police officers who lost their lives in an ambush laid by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959. The day serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication displayed by police personnel.
Speaking at the function, the HLG termed the day as important as brave CRPF jawans gave the supreme sacrifice of their lives for the nation. He complimented the Police for remembering the jawans by organising a grand function and reading out the names of the martyrs on the occasion. He stated that society remembers their supreme sacrifice and is indebted to them for the nation’s security.
The HLG highlighted the need for security forces stationed at borders to stay alert to thwart futile attempts of enemy forces to disturb peace and harmony in society. He stated that the armed and paramilitary forces have important roles in ensuring peace and harmony and maintaining democracy within the country. He appreciated the vision and mission of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi in providing all possible assistance to the armed and paramilitary forces to safeguard the nation and also developing arms and ammunitions indigenously to make India atma nirbhar.

Stating that the function is a dedication and salute to the family of the martyrs and armed/paramilitary forces, the HLG commended the armed and paramilitary forces and the family members of Police officials who laid down their lives for the nation. He hoped that the Police, armed and paramilitary forces would continue to perform their duties with full responsibility and dedication for the nation’s safety and security.
The HLG laid a wreath at the Police Martyrs Memorial and felicitated the family members of the police officials who laid down their lives in the line of duty, including late Inspector Tsewang Namgyal; late Sub-Inspector Stanzin Nurboo, late Assistant Sub-Inspector Sonam Dorjey; late Constable Ghulam Abass; Late Constable Shabir Hussain along with families of the hot spring survivors- Shri Sonam Wangyal, Shri Kunzang Dechan and Shri Sonam Dorjay.
Earlier, DGP Ladakh Police, Dr SD Singh Jamwal, IPS, recited the names of the martyrs.
Rashtriya salute and Shok Shastra Salami were also given by the Police contingent on the occasion.
Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Shri Ghulam Mehdi; Councillors from LAHDC Leh; Advisor to the HLG, DR Pawan Kotwal, IAS; Principal Secretary, Shri Sanjeev Khirwar, IAS; Secretary, Shri Vikram Singh Malik, IAS; DIG Ladakh Police, Shri Gaurav Sharma, IPS; Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Shri Santosh Sukhadeve; SSP Leh, Ms Shruti Arora, IPS; government officials; Police officials; retired Police officials, families of martyrs, NCC cadets and school students were present during the function.
