Ladakh Observed Bandh Following Detention of Sonam Wangchuk and Pad Yatris

VoL Desk, October 01: Both the districts of Ladakh Union Territory observed a complete shutdown on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, following a call by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB). The bandh disrupted daily life and movement across the region.

The protest was triggered by the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk and Pad Yatris from Ladakh during their “Delhi Chalo” march. Upon learning of the detention in Delhi, the KDA and Leh Apex Body (LAB) immediately called for the bandh.

In a press release, the KDA stated: “We, the Kargil Democratic Alliance, appeal to all religious, political, social, and commercial organizations and establishments in Kargil to observe a complete Ladakh Bandh on October 1, 2024. This call for unity arises in response to the unjust detention of our volunteers and leaders, including members of the KDA, LAB, and social activist Sonam Wangchuk, by Delhi Police. They were prevented from entering the jurisdiction of the Union Territory of Delhi.”

The KDA condemned the detentions, stating: “This detention is a blatant violation of our fundamental rights to freedom of expression and assembly. It is an affront not only to democratic principles but also to the dignity of the people of Ladakh. The actions of the ruling dispensation and the Delhi Police clearly reflect their disregard for the voices of our community. We must stand united in protest against such inhumane behavior.”

The KDA urged all residents of Kargil and Leh, including shopkeepers, transporters, and various establishments, to participate in the bandh to show solidarity with the struggle for justice. They also highlighted the importance of standing together to demand accountability for the actions taken against their leaders and the continued pursuit of the four-point agenda championed by the KDA and LAB.
