UoL hosts seminar on explore Gilgit-Baltistan’s roots, heritage & politics
Kargil, April 26: The Center for Gilgit-Baltistan Studies at Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, hosted a significant one-day seminar titled “Gilgit-Baltistan: Exploring Roots, Heritage, and Politics.” The event was graced by Prof. S.K. Mehta, Honorable Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh as the Chief Guest, and Lieutenant Colonel Sumit Sardana from the 8th Mountain Division, Indian Army as Guest of Honor.
Worthy Rector Madam Kaneez Fathima delivered the formal welcome address. Madam Kaneez Fatima emphasized the historical connections between Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan and outlined the objectives of the seminar and further stressed upon the urgent need for scholarly works to understand the interconnectedness across borders and the significance of the center in facilitating scholarly contributions.
Distinguished scholars and historians like Mr. Sadiq Hardasi, Mr. Tsewang Gyaltsen, Dr. Sonam Wangchok, Mr. Bashir Wafa, Mr. Mohd. Ali, Mr. Raza Amjad, and Dr. Kunchok Paldan shared invaluable insights into the cultural, historical, and political dimensions of Gilgit-Baltistan. Discussions ranged from linguistic and heritage ties to contemporary political scenarios, emphasizing the region’s strategic significance and its historical connections with Ladakh.

The seminar culminated in the formal inauguration of the Center for Gilgit-Baltistan Studies by the chief guest Prof. S.K. Mehta, Honorable Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh, marking a pivotal step towards fostering scholarly engagements and preserving the shared heritage between Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan. Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to speakers, acknowledging their profound contributions. Dr. Jaffar Ali Khan delivered the closing remarks, extending gratitude to participants, organizers, and supporters for their unwavering dedication to scholarly endeavors in the region.
The event underscored the importance of interdisciplinary dialogues and academic collaborations in understanding and preserving the rich cultural tapestry of Gilgit-Baltistan and its enduring ties with neighboring regions.
