Dr. Anwar Tsarpa Defends PhD Thesis on Shia Factional Conflicts in Kargil

Unveiling Historical Dynamics and Global Perspectives

VoL Desk, March 11: In a significant contribution to the historical discourse on Kargil post-independence, Anwar Ali Tsarpa successfully defended his PhD thesis today at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peace Building, Jamia Millia Islamia – Central University, New Delhi.

Anwar Tsarpa’s doctoral research focused on “Inter-Group Conflicts in Kargil: Historical Analysis of Yogma Pa – Gongma Pa and IKMT – ISK Conflict,” completed under the guidance of Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi.

The thesis delves into the Shia factional conflicts in Kargil through the lens of the global divide among Shia clerics on their perspectives regarding “political Islam”, where politics is an essential part of religion; and, second “political quietism in Islam”.

Employing an “intersectionality” framework, the research analyzes the amalgamation of global and local factors influencing Shia factional conflicts in the Kargil district.

Providing a comprehensive account of two conflicts since the establishment of Jamiat Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil, the Millenarian Movement of Syed Haider Rizvi, and the formation of Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust Kargil, the thesis contributes valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of Kargil’s history.
