VoL Desk, Feb. 04: The Baseej-e-Zaraat wa Baghbani (BZB), the agricultural wing of the Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust (IKMT), conducted an awareness event on new farming techniques during the Dah-e-Fajr celebration, marking the success of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

Held at Jama Masjid Kargil as part of a ten-day program organized by various wings of IKMT, the event was chaired by Chairman Sheikh Sadiq Rajai, with Assistant Professor Mohammad Shabbir from the University of Ladakh as the Guest of Honor.

Sheikh Rajai emphasized that timely preservation of Ladakh’s medicinal and local plants is crucial to prevent their extinction, ensuring they don’t become mere pages in history. He commended BZB’s initiatives in research and farming activities.

Dr. Shabbir presented insights into various medicinal plants in Ladakh and suggested the establishment of a phytochemical laboratory in Kargil by Baseej-e-Zaraat for analyzing plant components. Acting on this suggestion, the organization committed to taking necessary actions within two weeks.

Dr. Shabbir highlighted the ecological importance of medicinal plants in Ladakh, emphasizing the need for plant preservation. He specifically mentioned the critically endangered Umbulakpa plant due to indiscriminate unplugging and usage.

Acknowledging financial support from LAHDC Kargil, particularly from former CEC Feroz Ahmad Khan, Baseej-e-Zaraat member, Haji Mohd Sadiq expressed gratitude for assistance in establishing a research center for mushroom production. The organization successfully conducted experiments and trained local farmers in mushroom cultivation.

Furthermore, Baseej-e-Zaraat initiated lavender production for oil extraction, valued at Rs 9000 per kilogram. The oil holds medicinal benefits, aiding in drug addiction recovery, improving sleep, and treating eye infections.
