Ladakh Youth Leader and Councillor Raises Alarm Over Idols Dumped in Indus River

VoL Desk, Oct. 25: In a heartfelt appeal, Smanla Dorje Nurboo, a prominent Youth Leader from Ladakh and sitting Congress Councillor in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, voiced deep concern regarding the dumping of religious idols in the sacred Indus River.

Expressing worry for both Ladakh’s delicate environment and the local way of life, Councillor Nurboo earnestly called upon Hindu devotees to honor Ladakh’s unique lifestyle and traditions.

“We, the people of Ladakh have lived along the Indus for centuries. Unlike other civilizations, we haven’t made it a dump yard in the name of religion. If not the fragile ecosystem, can atleast the way of living of the people of Ladakh be respected, pls?” pleaded Smanla in a passionate post on X.

The Indus River holds immense significance in the lives of Ladakhi people and is deeply rooted in the region’s history. The majority of Ladakh’s key settlements, including Kargil town, Leh, Thicksey, Shey, Basgo, and Tingmosgang, are situated along the Indus River’s banks, underlining its vital role in shaping Ladakh’s communities.

Moreover, the Indus River serves as the lifeline for agriculture and food production in significant areas of Ladakh. It acts as the backbone supporting agricultural activities that sustain the local populace, emphasizing the river’s critical importance to Ladakh’s agricultural heritage.

Councillor Nurboo’s appeal resonates not only as a call for environmental preservation but also as a plea to preserve Ladakh’s cultural integrity, urging everyone to recognize and safeguard the region’s distinctive way of life.

  1. We all have to support Smanla Dorje Nurboo’s request to stop the dumping of religious items or even the dumping of everything to Great River Indus!

  2. It’s a commendable initiative to discontinue that types of practices those harm our environment and culture . We are aware of such things, otherwise , it might be trend in the future. It’s time to take action.

  3. First of all, you should not write dumping, add an appropriate word to do that, it’s an emotion to many people or total religion. And it should be immersed in water, and idols are made of mud, clays which are parts of nature. Just immersion of these idols won’t harm your ladakhs Indus river. And yet your whole ladakah you are damaging by yourself stop putting air conditioning to the hotels, who needs air conditioning in ladakh. Does air conditioning doesn’t affect your ladakh nature? It does isn’t? If so concerned about the environment stop using air conditioning and there’s many things which are being used in ladakh.
    Thank you

Any short of religious activity harmful for environment is not religious 🤔

  5. Idol immersion is a religious activity in Hinduism which must be respected and welcomed. Buddhism and Hinduism have deep roots inter connecting each other emerging from the same source. The focus should be on environmentally friendly idols for emersion. Emersion itself is not a problem is welcome. 🙏🙏🙏

  6. I agree, one should not spoil the environment with the name of religion and I visited Ladakh/Leh this year. Such a beautiful place in India, and its our responsibility to save and not to spoil this place in any manner. Jai Jawan…Jai Kisan..Jai Hindustan.
